Chasing the Sakura Front

Japan's cherry blossom season is arguably the world's greatest annual photography event. The sakura zensen (cherry blossom front) begins in Kyushu in mid-March and reaches Hokkaido in early May, giving dedicated photographers weeks to follow the blooms northward.

The most photogenic window is the 5–7 days of full bloom (mankai). Time your visit to coincide with overcast days for soft, even light, or arrive at first light on clear days for backlit petals and empty paths.

  • Philosopher's Path, Kyoto β€” canal-side blossom reflection
  • Himeji Castle β€” white fortress crowned with pink blossom
  • Maruyama Park, Kyoto β€” weeping cherry tree illuminated at night
  • Chidorigafuchi moat, Tokyo β€” petals drifting onto the Imperial moat
  • Hirosaki Castle, Aomori β€” Japan's finest castle blossom display

Japan's Crimson Season

Autumn koyo (foliage) rivals spring sakura for sheer photographic drama. Japan's mountainous terrain creates spectacular colour gradients β€” fiery vermillion maples, golden ginkgo avenues, and copper beech forests contrasting against ancient grey stone architecture.

The colour front moves southward from Hokkaido's peak in late September to Kyushu in late November. Nikko's ornate Tōshōgū Shrine surrounded by blazing maple forests is consistently one of Japan's most extraordinary autumn spectacles.

  • Nikko TōshōgΕ«, Tochigi β€” elaborate shrine in blazing maple forest
  • Eikan-dō Temple, Kyoto β€” Japan's most famous autumn foliage temple
  • Kōyasan, Wakayama β€” mountaintop monastery draped in autumn colour
  • Shirakawa-go, Gifu β€” thatched farmhouses among red and gold hills
  • Jōzankei, Hokkaido β€” gorge with emerald river and fiery slopes
